Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man

Joseph Merrick, 'the Elephant man' (1862-1890), whom the British surgeon Frederick Treves (1853-1923) rescued and maintained in a room in the London Hospital from 1886 until Merrick's death in 1890. Joseph Merrick was originally thought to be suffering from elephantiasis, though others have posited neurofibromatosis type I, also known as von Recklinghausen disease. Proteus syndrome has also been suggested as a possibility.
