Welles appeard staggered by reports from coast to coast that radio listeners, convinced by the realism of the play, ran from their homes, called public agencies for assistance, and took other drastic measures to escape the Invaders. Welles said he was deeply shocked and surprised by terror arising from the play, which was an adaptation of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, written many years ago.
