Antigens and Antibodies

Diagrammatic presentation of antigen/antibody reaction. Antigens are substances that are capable of mobilizing the immune system and provoking an immune response. Most antigens are large, complex molecules that are not normally present in the body. Antibodies are soluble proteins secreted by the plasma cell offfspring of sensitized B-cells in response to an antigen and are capable of binding specifically with that antigen. This artist rendering shows the Y shaped antibodies attaching to surface antigens on bacterial cells as the cells enter the blood stream. This attachment leads to bacterial cell lysis and phagocytosis.
