Abraham Colles, Irish Surgeon & Professor

Abraham Colles (1773-1843) was professor of Anatomy, Surgery and Physiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Colles devised treatments for aneurysm and defined the 'Colles fracture' and 'Colles Law'. He developed the technique of tying large arteries affected by an aneurysm with a ligature. The 'Colles fracture' is a fracture of the radius (a bone just above the wrist) which is the most common type of fracture in people over the age of forty suffering from osteoporosis. His 'Colles Law' states that a healthy mother may bear a syphilitic child without becoming infected.
