mantel clock, c. 1810, bronze, gilded, gilded, General: 53.5 x 35 x 18cm (535 x 350 x 180mm), eagle, reading, library, angel, woman, interior, Empire style mantel clock made of fire gilded bronze on slate blackened share. The timepiece has a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and gold-plated hands. The dial is placed above a depiction of a bookcase or library with a niche in the center with a bust of Homer on a high flared base. On either side of the niche are two bookcases filled with bookbindings. The frieze on top with the dial is flanked by two reading winged female figures. On top of two lying S-shaped classical volute ornaments decorated with four-leaf flowers and palm leaves. In the center of the frieze on top of an unornamented rectangular element is a glove chair with a celestial globe in blue enamel with gold stars. The blackened case is decorated with a number of baluster-shaped columns, on the side of the frieze with an owl, the symbol of Pallas Athena. In front of the library cupboard, on the left of a Greek chair, is a female figure (Clio) reading a book at a table covered with books, a cup, a pair of compasses and a snag. The table has a number of legs, one of which is a leg with a winged lion's head and a lion's claw. On the right on a high profiled stand with a round base with three lion's feet a flying eagle that has a gondola-shaped oil lamp hanging from chains in the mouth. The pendulum lens of the pendulum located at the back has the shape of a five-pointed star enclosed in a circle. The back of the timepiece is not closed, 1937.
