RUSSELL, BERTRAND

Orig. bildtext... INVENTOR OF RADAR ATTACKS GOVERNMENT. Sir Robert Watson - Watt, the inventor of radar, spoke of the great danger of world destruction at a mass rally in Trafalgar Square, London, yesterday. Sir Robert was a witness who was not allowed to answer questions at the recent trial of anti-nuclear demonstrators who were charged under the official secrets act. The rally had been called yesterday by the Committee of 100 to protest about the way in which the trial had been carried out: In front of 2,000 supporters standing in the chill wind and flurrying snow, Sir Robert, who had been brought from Santa Barbara, California, specially for the trial, said: The fairy Tale of the great deterrent is a menace not only to our survival, but to the survival of the human race. He said no invention was perfect. Radar warning systems depended on humanbeings, who were even less perfect. The situation was fraught with danger of human or mechanical error. He said that at the end of 1960 the world's stockpile of nuclear weapons was about 60,000 megatons - three million Hiroshimas. Earl Russell, the leader of the Committee of 100, said that the trial had shown the Government were not concerned with the morality welfare and conscience of the population. This was the mentality that made Buchenwald possible he said. Another speaker was the actress Vanessa Redgrave, who has been acclaimed in Britain as the Actress of the Year. This Picture is of Earl Russell at the Rally. Anm. Nobelpriset i litteratur 1950. Författare persons: Bertrand Russell sites: LONDON ;STORBRITANNIEN.
