The New "Devil's Bridge" On The St. Gotthard Pass In The Alps -- A new road bridge over the Schollenen Gorge on the St. Gotthard Pass is at present under construction. In recent years it has become clear that the existing bridge, built in 1826, could no longer stand the strain of the ever-increasing flow of traffic into Switzerland. In this photograph both bridges can be seen - by dint of a carefully co-ordinated programme the Swiss engineers expect to complete the new bridge in only six months from the starting date, which was in the spring of 1955.
