Dr Werner Forssmann 52 year old German surgeon and urinologist who with Professor Andre F Cournand of the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and Professor Dickinson W Richards also of Columbia has won the 1956 Nobel Medicine Prize. Three of the world's outstanding heart specialists, they are jointly awarded the prize for their discoveries concerning heart catherization and pathological changes in the circulatory system. Forssmann invented the heart catheter on which he started work in 1939. Bad Kreuznach, Germany. October 18th 1956.
