A.E. Verill's Giant Squid, Architeuthis, 1880

Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size due to deep-sea gigantism: recent estimates put the maximum size at 43 feet for females and 33 feet for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles. Claims of specimens measuring 66 feet or more have not been scientifically documented. Addison Emery Verill (February 9, 1839 - December 10, 1926) was an American zoologist. Image appeared in his "The cephalopods of the north-eastern coast of America",1879-81.
