Tanner, Medieval Tradesman

The tanner soaks the hides in a stream, throws them into the lime, leaves them a long time in the tan, then dries them on poles. Tanning is the process of making leather from the skins of animals which does not easily decompose. Traditionally, tanning used tannin, an acidic chemical compound. Coloring may occur during tanning. A tannery is the term for a place where these skins are processed.
