The late Mr. Henry Fourdrinier, the Patentee of the Paper-Making Machine, 1854. Portrait of British entrepreneur Henry Fourdrinier, '...perfector of...an invention which has contributed materially to the diffusion of knowledge and the progress of civilisation, and without which the art of printing could hardly have arrived at that perfection which it has now attained...the manufacture of continuous paper became one of the most useful discoveries of the age...This invention has enabled the earthenware manufacturers to increase the beauty and accuracy of their patterns by the aid of a superior kind of tissue paper; has enabled the lithographic and other engravers, paper-stainers and publishers greatly to improve their respective arts; and has led the way to many new inventions of the greatest importance...'.
