The Crumlin Viaduct, on the Western Valley Railway [in South Wales], 1854. '...each of the iron piers which are to support the girders...is, within 12 ft., the height of the London Monument...each of the girders...is 150 feet long...the Taff Vale Extension Railway...will contribute materially to develop the mineral wealth of South Wales...on the right hand is a smaller Viaduct of two piers stretching across the Kenydon-road; and a Tramway, belonging to Sir B. Hall, Bart., M.P. The principle of the girder is stated to be patented by Captain Warren and the contractor of the Viaduct, Mr. T. W. Kennard...When the girder was "planted," a loud and hearty cheer burst from the lips of the workmen...while one, more courageous than the rest, actually walked across the girder, which was about a foot in width, and 200 feet from the ground'.
