Samuel Wendell Williston (1852 -1918) was an American educator and paleontologist who was the first to propose that birds developed flight by a cursorial method (running), rather than arboreal (by leaping from tree to tree). Although never employed as a professional entomologist, he a well-renowned specialist on the taxonomy and systematics of flies, specializing in Diptera.
