The Port Said statue (pictured) of Ferdinand de Lesseps, French architect of the Suez Canal, was destroyed yesterday.It was shattered by dynamite, and the main section from the knees upwards fell into a barge in the harbour.A shouting crowd then attacked the remaining section to complete the destruction.The Government sponsored Middle East News Agency said "members of the popular resistance squads" carried out the destruction.It added: "The statue was shattered and sank into the water amid the deafening applause of a huge crowd who assembled to witness this eradication of a trace of imperialism standing as a challenge to the gallant inhabitants of Port Said."
