The Huis ten Bosch (House in the Wood) at The Hague, designed by Pieter Post, was built in the late 1640s for Amalia van Solms, wife of the Dutch stadholder, Prince Frederick Hendrick. In these two views, Jan van der Heyden, depicted the country retreat's elegant garden, where sculpture and trellis-work obelisks mark the main walkways between the French-inspired parterres de broderie.
