Gurkhas armed with their kukri or khukuri

Gurkhas armed with their kukri or khukuri, a Nepalese knife with an inwardly curved blade, together with members of the Gordon Highlanders storming the Dargai Heights in 1897 during The Tirah Campaign. The piper, Sergeant George Frederick Findlater, shot in the feet during the advance, unable to walk, and exposed to enemy fire, continued playing to encourage the battalion's advance. He was later awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery. From The Century Edition of Cassell's History of England, published c. 1900.
