Summer Court Hat for a Third Rank Civil Official, c. 1850, 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (24.1 x 29.2 x 29.2 cm), Silk braid, bamboo, silk gauze, and glass, China, 19th century, The summer or 'cool hat' consisted of a conical framework of split bamboo with a taut silk covering and brocade rim. Red, unspun silk floss, or red silk braided tassels were used to decorate the crown. The transparent blue glass 'jewel' is indication of a third rank civil official.
