Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels. Artist: Lippo Memmi (Filippo di Memmo) (Italian, Sienese, active by 1317-died 1356). Dimensions: Overall, with shaped top and engaged (partially modern) frame, 26 1/4 x 13 in. (66.7 x 33 cm); painted surface 19 3/4 x 10 1/8 in. (50.2 x 25.7 cm); predella 1 1/2 x 10 in. (3.8 x 25.4 cm). Date: ca. 1350.
The Madonna and Child are flanked by diminutive figures of Saints John the Baptist and Francis of Assisi while the nine choirs of heavenly angels--as described by the fifth-century neo-platonic writer known as the Pseudo-Dionysius--ornament the pinnacle. Other saints are shown in an arcade. Lippo attains a refinement of execution equal to that of his famous brother-in-law Simone Martini. The panel formed a diptych with a Crucifixion (Musée du Louvre, Paris). Its frame is modern.
