Frank Arthur Worsley (February 22, 1872 - February 1, 1943) was a New Zealand sailor and explorer. In 1914, he joined the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. After the expedition's ship Endurance was trapped in pack ice and wrecked, he and the crew sailed lifeboats to Elephant Island. From there, Worsley, Shackleton and four others sailed the lifeboat James Caird 800 miles across the stormy South Atlantic Ocean, eventually arriving at South Georgia. Worsley's navigation skills were crucial to their safe arrival. During WWI, Worsley was responsible for the sinking of a German U-boat and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Photographed by Frank Hurley (cropped and cleaned).
