Baking soda reacts with acid. A 0.1M solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl, left, reagent bottle) reacts in a beaker (right) with solid baking soda (NaHCO3, centre, watchglass). Carbon dioxide bubbles are produced: NaHCO3 + HCl -> NaCl + H2O + CO2.
