'H.M.S. "Amphion"', (1919). The battlecruiser 'HMS Amphion' was the first ship of the Royal Navy to be sunk in the First World War. On 6 August 1914 she struck a German mine off the Thames Estuary, and sank with the loss of 132 crew. 'The ill-fated cruiser sunk in the North Sea through striking a mine. Over 130 of the crew and a number of German prisoners of war went to the bottom with her.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. II, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight.
