Warren Hastings 1732 or 1733 -1818, British colonial administrator. A protige of Lord Clive, who established British rule in India, Hastings carried out major reforms, and became Governor of Bengal 1772 and Governor General of India 1774. Impeached for corruption on his return to England in 1786, he was acquitted in 1795. This successor to Lord Clive as General Governor of India enlarged the British Dominion by means of brutal blackmail and cunning deceit in his dealings with the local overlords.
