Entitled: "Specially designed capsule-shaped torpedo to transport the Luxor obelisk to France." The Luxor Obelisk (Obélisque de Louxor) is a 75 foot high Egyptian obelisk standing at the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris, France. The obelisk is over 3,000 years old and was originally situated outside of Luxor Temple, where its twin remains to this day. The ruler of Egypt and Sudan, Muhammad Ali, presented the 3,300 year old Luxor Obelisk to France in 1826. In 1832, the French paddle ship Sphinx sailed to Alexandria to rendezvous there with the barge Louqsor, which was to load the Luxor Obelisk and bring it to Paris. Sphinx then towed Louqsor back to France and arrived home a year later. Because the technology and engineering science was at its early stages when the obelisk was originally brought to Paris, the effort, manpower and expertise was tremendous. And because of this, the monolith stands on a pedestal that portrays the procedures and the different devices that were used in order to erect the Luxor obelisk in its chosen position in the middle of the Place de la Concorde square. According to one account, the pulleys that were being used to erect the obelisk had reached their limit, but one of the onlookers was a sailor who shouted out to moisten the ropes, because he knew that hemp ropes always shrunk when they were drying out. No photographer dated, 1833.
