Suit of armour and seal (Karolus) of Charlemagne or Charles the Great, King of the Franks, Emperor of the Romans, 748-814. He wears Frankish national costume with Roman elements. Helmet with crowm, quilted tunic (tunica) decorated with shields, trousers (feminalia), leggings (tibialia) wrapped with bands (crura fasciolis). Handcoloured lithograph by Villain after an illustration by Horace de Viel-Castel from his Collection des costumes, armes et meubles pour servir à l'histoire de la France (Collection of costumes, weapons and furniture to be used in the history of France), Treuttel & Wurtz, Bossange, 1827.
