Western Tarsier

Western tarsier (Tarsius bancanus) clinging to a branch. This small nocturnal primate has huge eyes, which help it see in the dark. The pupil can expand to almost the entire width of the eye to allow as much light as possible to reach the retina at the back of the eye. Its large ears also give the tarsier excellent hearing. The western tarsier descends to the ground to hunt where it hops like a frog. It feeds mainly on insects, which it creeps up on before pouncing. The tarsier may also eat scorpions and poisonous snakes. The western tarsier occurs on the islands of Indo-Malaysia. Photographed in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
