Eldridge Cleaver, American Activist and Author

Entitled: "Cleaver, Minister of Information for the Black Panther Party and presidential candidate for the Peace and Freedom Party speaking at the Woods-Brown Outdoor Theatre, American University. Leroy Eldridge Cleaver (August 31, 1935 - May 1, 1998) was an African-American writer, political activist, and convicted rapist. As editor of the official Panther's newspaper, his influence on the direction of the Party was rivaled only by founders Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. A self-confessed serial rapist who specifically targeted white women, and reformed racist, Cleaver wrote Soul On Ice (1968) a collection of essays. In the essays, he traces his own development from a "supermasculine menial" to a radical black liberationist. After spending seven years in exile in Cuba, Algeria, and France, he returned to the US in 1975, where he became involved in various religious groups, as well as becoming a conservative Republican, appearing at Republican events. He died in 1998, at the age of 62. His family asked that the hospital not reveal the cause of death, although he was known to have diabetes and prostate cancer. Photographed by Marion S.
