The plans for the building were drawn up by the French architect Claude-François Brunet Debaines (1799-1855), and construction began in 1857 under the direction of Lucien Hénault (1823-1908). In 1860, construction was halted due to lack of resources. In 1870 its works were restarted by the Chilean engineer Manuel Aldunate (1815-1904). Finally the building was completed by the Italian architect Eusebio Chelli (1820-1890). It was inaugurated on June 1, 1876. Engraving.
