A differential hoist consists of an endless chain that is guided at the top over a set of disks of unequal diameter and at the bottom over a single disk with hook. The difference in diameter between the upper discs ensures that when the end of the larger disc is pulled, less chain is fed to the lower block via the smaller disc than is pulled away and the distance between the two blocks is reduced. This specific model also has a drive wheel with an endless rope, the movement of which is transferred via a set of gears to the hoist in a ratio of 58/10, Adriaan Rosel, 1860, brass (alloy), rope, h 89.5 cm × w 18.5 cm × d 7.5 cm.
