UNITED STATES MEDAL FOR MERIT GIVEN TO BRITISHERS BY U.S. AMBASSADOR IN LONDON TO-DAY -FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO UNITED NATIONS 18.5.48 Three Britishers - Sir Alexander Fleming, of Penicillin fame, - Sir Howard Florey, also famous for his work on penicillin, - and Sir Edwin Herbert, who organised the first really competent and worldwide censorship in history during the World War II, - were presented with the United States Medal for Merit by the American Ambassador, Mr. Lewis W. Douglas, at the American Embassy, Grosvenor Square (London) to-day. The Ambassador made the awards on behalf of the President of the United States, Mr. Harry Truman. Sir Howard Florey was presented with the Medal for Merit for Outstanding Services to the United Nations from 1939 to 1945. Sir Howard distinguished himself during this period through important contributions and fundamental researches in the development of penicillin, and made possible the large scale production of penicillin for the incalculable benefit of the sick and wounded. Anm. L Williams Douglas, 1894-1974, amerikansk politiker, diplomat, affärsman och akademiker, ambassadör i Storbritannien 1947-1950. H Florey, 1898-1968, brittisk patolog, fick nobelpriset i medicin 1945, tillsammans med Alexander Fleming och Ernst Boris Chain, för upptäckten av penicillinet och dess medicinska verkningar. Anm.
