Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu: October 26, 1942. The troop carrier, USS President Coolidge goes down in the harbor at Espiritu Santo in the South Pacific after hittng a friendly mine. She had previously been a luxury liner of the Dollar Steamship Line, and was converted for the war. The captain had not been told of the mines in the harbor. There were two casualties out of the 5340 men aboard.
