Native American Dance, 16th Century

Late 16th-century engraving by Theodor de Bry, after a watercolor by John White in what is now North Carolina, titled Their Dances at Their Great Feasts. The engraving shows men and women dancing around a circle defined by posts with carved faces. Three women stand together in the centre. Although de Bry never set foot in the New World himself, he made many copies of watercolors by other artists, often making them look more European. The engravings are some of the earliest, if not necessarily the most accurate, surviving records of the Native Americans of the period.
