Johansen in Frederick George Jackson's saloon at Cape Flora. Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen (May 15, 1867 January 3, 1913) was a Norwegian polar explorer. He shipped out with the Fridtjof Nansen expedition in 1893-1896, and accompanied Nansen to notch a new Farthest North record near the North Pole. Johansen also participated in the expedition of Roald Amundsen to the South Pole in 1910-1912. A chance encounter between explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Frederick George Jackson took place here in 1896. Jackson was leading the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition, based at Cape Flora, when this meeting occurred, on June 17, 1896. No photographer credited, 1896 (cropped and cleaned).
