As first lady, Pat Nixon promoted volunteer efforts to solve problems in American communities. Her most famous volunteer effort occured following an earthquake in Peru in 1970. Mrs. Nixon visited Peru to bring much needed earthquake relief supplies after calling on Americans to organize relief programs for the victims.
