Electric door openers of cell block D. D-Block gained notoriety as a treatment block for some of the worst inmates, with varying degrees of punishment (isolation, solitary and strip). Prisoners usually spent anywhere from 3-19 days in Solitary. Prisoners ate their meals in their cells, were not permitted to work and could only shower twice a week. The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, 1.25 miles off the coast of San Francisco, California, United States, which operated from August 11, 1934, until March 21, 1963.
