John F. Stevens, American Engineer

John Frank Stevens (April 25, 1853 - June 2, 1943) was an American engineer responsible for building the Great Northern Railway and the Panama Canal from 1905 to 1907. Stevens became the chief engineer on the Northern railroad in 1895 where he was responsible for having built over a thousand miles of track including the Cascade Tunnel. Theodore Roosevelt appointed him in 1905 as the chief engineer of the Panama Canal. His main contribution was in building the infrastructure that would be needed to complete the canal. He abruptly quit in 1907 when the actual building was to begin.
