Théophile-Jules Pelouze, French Chemist

Théophile-Jules Pelouze (1807-1867) was a French chemist. Though Pelouze made no discovery of outstanding importance, he was a busy investigator. He researched salicin, beetroot sugar, organic acids (gallic, malic, tartaric, butyric, lactic, etc.), oenanthic ether (with Liebig), nitrosulphates, guncotton, and on the composition and manufacture of glass. He carried out determinations of the atomic weights of several elements. He was a major inspiration for his students, including Ascanio Sobrero, the discoverer of nitroglycerin and Alfred Nobel the discoverer of dynamite. He dies in 1867 at the age of 60.
