Northern Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus)

This Northern Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) was trawled from the Gulf of Mexico in a net that fished from 1,500m to the surface. from an open ocean locality, about 150 miles S-SE of Gulf Port, MS, USA. Males hold eggs and developing young in their brood pouch, ejecting them once they hit a developmental stage where they can swim on their own. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project.
