Niccolo Polo (1230-1294) and Maffeo Polo (1230-1309) were Italian merchants best known as the father and uncle of the explorer Marco Polo. The brothers established trading posts in Constantinople, Sudak in Crimea, and in a western part of the Mongol Empire in Asia. They reached modern-day China before returning to deliver a message from Kublai Khan to the Pope. Taking Marco with them, the Polos then made another journey through Asia. Illustration from Marco Polo; his travels and adventures by George Makepeace Towle, 1880 (cropped and cleaned).
