Persepolis, Iran. The palace terrace complex was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire founded by Darius I in 518 BC. Based on the model of Assyrian and Babylonian palaces, a succession of elements were added by succeeding great kings. The complex is thought to have met its end when Alexander the Great is reputed to have burned Persepolis after 330 BC.
