Rayleigh-Benard Convection Cells

Rayleigh-Benard convection cells. Photograph of a thin layer of vegetable oil mixed with aluminum powder and heated gently on a hotplate. Benard cells are convection cells that appear spontaneously in a liquid layer when heat is applied from below. Henri Benard, a French physicist, was the first to conduct this experiment which illustrates the theory of dissipative structures.
