Marble portrait, probably of Matidia, niece of the emperor Trajan and mother of Sabina, wife of the emperor Hadrian. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm). Date: A.D. 117-138. This portrait resembles those of Matidia, daughter of Marciana, elder sister of the emperor Trajan. Strands appear to be woven in a braid-like pattern through the double crescents that form the artificial hairpiece surrounding the face, but the structure is lower than on many of the official images of Matidia.
