Wooded Upland Landscape. Artist: Thomas Gainsborough (British, Sudbury 1727-1788 London). Dimensions: 47 3/8 x 58 1/8 in. (120.3 x 147.6 cm). Date: probably 1783. Gainsborough was a born draftsman and in his early years made many drawings after nature, but he was uninterested in the English tradition of topographical painting. This idyllic imaginary landscape and the chalk sketch on which it is based were probably composed in the artist's London studio in 1783.
