Right behind a ballpoint table covered with a Persian carpet, on which a still life of a skull, a helmet, an hourglass, books and papers, sits a young man, possibly the painter. He is engrossed in a large book and he rests his head on the left hand. He wears blond hair and a short pointed beard. To the right of the table is a painter's stick and, more to the right, a wallet and a stool, with an earthenware jug. On the right in the background a chair on which a beret hangs and against which a gun is mounted. In the center is a high gold leather screen, over which a yellow, a green and a salmon-colored cloth are hung, as well as clothing, powder horns and a sword. To the left of the table is a still life of a drum, a plumed hat, boots, two white vases and a picture frame, lit by the daylight shining in from the left. In the foreground a black and the arm piece of a harness. On the far left, an easel with a painting and more to the rear, against the wall covered with gold leather, is an oak four-door cabinet with a celestial globe, parts of armor, books and porcelain. Above the cupboard on the left a coat of arms and on the far right a 17th-century man's portrait. Signed bottom left.
