HERMANUS WILLEM KOEKKOEK. The sinking of the 'Anglia', First World War, 17 November 1915, (c1920). 'Mined in the English Channel: the sinking of the Hospital Ship Anglia'. The British ship SS 'Anglia' was requisitioned as HMHS (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) 'Anglia'. While carrying 390 injured officers and soldiers from France to England, she struck a mine laid by a German U-boat, and sank with the loss of 134 lives. The nearby torpedo gunboat HMS 'Hazard' helped evacuate passengers and crew. From "The Great World War - A History" Volume IV, edited by Frank A Mumby.
