Locomotion No. 1 is to be seen at Darlington Main Line Station and although more than once rebuilt, it retains its original appearance. Its wheels, however, are of a pattrn introduced by Timothy Hackworth. The engine was built to the specifications of George Stephenson at the Forth Street Works, Newcastle, founded by him and his son. It opened the World's first locomotive-worked public railway on September 27th 1825 when it was driven by George Stephenson himself. ©TopFoto.
