An observation tower was a watchtower of the GDR border troops. It consisted of concrete elements and could be entered through a steel door. The height varied depending on the necessity of the surroundings. Staggered metal ladders inside led upwards via two to three intermediate levels. The pulpit provided space for four to five soldiers, who usually formed the alarm group. The roof terrace was secured by a steel pipe railing. On the roof terrace was a swivelling and remote-controlled searchlight.
