English Milkmaid Milking Cow,1887

A milkmaid (or milk maid) was a girl or woman who milked cows. She also used the milk to prepare dairy products such as cream, butter, and cheese. Many large houses employed milkmaids instead of having other staff do the work. As an agricultural product, milk is extracted from farm animals during or soon after pregnancy. Throughout the world, more than six billion people consume milk and milk products. Over 750 million people live in dairy farming households. Milk is a nutrient-rich, white liquid food produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is the primary source of nutrition for infant mammals (including humans who are breastfed) before they are able to digest other types of food. Image taken from page 73 of A Century of Ballads edited and illustrated in facsimile of the originals by John Ashton, 1887.
