Entitled: "L'Intérieur du comité révolutionnaire. Scène derniere." Shows two men pointing out others among a group of revolutionaries to be arrested, perhaps as a backlash to the reign of terror instigated by Robespierre and his followers. Overlooking the scene from a shelf in the background is a bust of Jean Paul Marat. The Reign of Terror (September 5 1793 - July 28, 1794) was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions. The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine (2,639 in Paris), and another 25,000 in summary executions across France. The French Revolution was a period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France that lasted from 1789 until 1799. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, experienced violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship by Napoleon that rapidly brought many of its principles to Western Europe and beyond. No artist credited, 1795.
