Friedrich August Kekule von Stradonitz, German organic chemist, c1885. In 1865, Kekule (1829-1896) published his theory of the structure of the benzene ring as a ring of six carbon atoms attached by double and single bonds alternately, a form which had appeared to him in a dream.
