According to Norse mythology, Odin, disguised as a farmhand named Bolverk, gave the drill called Rati to Baugi, the farmer, to drill a hole in the mountain where the Poetic Mead was hidden. Odin then became a snake, slipped inside the hole, and stole the mead, which he eventually dispensed among the gods and men gifted in poetry. Illustration from an 18th century Icelandic manuscript.
